Taiyang Ji compiled selected ancient stories passed down in Chinese folklore. The first chapter is called ‘The Finding of Fu Xi’, telling the story of the legendary ruler who is believed to be the first to teach humans how to fish and hunt. The second chapter is ‘The Swan Maiden’, a tragic love story between a mortal man and a spirit of the heavens. The third chapter, ‘The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl’, is a popular Chinese myth about the meeting of the cowherd and the weaver girl, both banished to opposite sides of the Milky Way. The fourth chapter, ‘The Immortals and the Peach Blossom Spring’, follows the adventures of a fisherman who finds an idyllic utopia hidden within a peach blossom grove. The fifth chapter, ‘The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea’, tells the story of eight Taoist immortals who cross the sea using various methods to attend an important gathering. The sixth and final chapter, ‘Legend of the White Snake’, is a tragic love story between a powerful white snake spirit and a mortal scholar. Through these stories, Taiyang Ji provides a glimpse into ancient Chinese culture and beliefs, showcasing the importance of nature, love, and spirituality.
